The Bait: As the pressures on our personal finances increase, it's a great relief when an e-mail arrives offering you the opportunity to consolidate all your monthly bills into one manageable payment. They tell you that this solution prevents harassment from debt recovery companies, repossessions, foreclosures and wipes out your debts.

The Catch: What the e-mail does not spell out is the need for you to enter into bankruptcy or an IVA (Individual Voluntary Agreement). These options are ways of dealing with serious financial issues but may not be appropriate for your personal situation. They are regarded as the last resort. Whilst the short term solution may provide some relief, it is important to note that your credit rating is negatively affected for 10 years and your access to loans, insurance, mortgages and other financial facilities severely harmed.
